Attorney Profile
ALAN S. GOLDBERGER is a New Jersey attorney. His practice focuses on sports and business law, sports and athletics risk management, and nonprofit association law. A former three-sport game official who officiated high school and college basketball and baseball and high school football for more than three decades, Alan works with officials’ associations, other sports organizations; and business enterprises to navigate a variety of legal issues; including those arising out of officiating, sports administration, governance, athletic competition, contractual relations, and governing body affiliations. In addition, his clients have included closely held and publicly traded corporations, small businesses, health care providers, airlines, banks, manufacturers, retailers, distributors, nonprofit membership organizations, educational institutions, religious organizations, sports officials at all levels, coaches, and other individuals engaged in professional services and business pursuits.
He is the author of Sports Officiating: A Legal Guide, now in its second edition; and a coauthor of Sport, Physical Activity and the Law a college textbook now in its third edition. He serves as Chair of the American Bar Association Nonprofit Athletic and Recreation Associations Subcommittee. He has taught sports law at the college level; most recently as an adjunct instructor of Sports Law at Fairleigh Dickinson University’s Master of Sports Law Program.
Alan has been a featured speaker to conferences on legal issues in sports and officiating, including the National Association of Sports Officials (“NASO”) Officiating Summit (2003-present), the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials, Inc., American Bar Association, Atlantic 10 Conference/Patriot League Developmental Camp, U.S. Lacrosse National Convention, Game Keepers D1 Professional Development Clinic, PIAA District IV Football Officials Clinic, National Intramural Recreation Association, National Police Athletic League, National Sports Concussion Coalition, New Jersey Council of Administrators of Health & Physical Education, Athletic Trainers Society of New Jersey; USA Lacrosse, state and local high school athletic associations, colleges, universities, school districts. and state and regional officials’ associations in California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, New Hampshire, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, and Washington.

Alan Goldberger is a member of the New Jersey, New York and Maryland Bars; and is admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey, the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. He is a graduate of Franklin & Marshall College and Rutgers University School of Law.
